More on Occupy Wall Street

I know I’ve been silent lately. Mostly, it has been from working nonstop as I get used to a new schedule with work. Who knew Americans had any money or credit left for the level of consumerism involved in a new iPhone launch?

My fascination with the Occupy Wall Street movement continues. Even though I don’t currently live in a place that would truly respect or understand the ideals of the movement (this being the heart of Tea Party Nation), I truly support the hopes of those people attempting to steer our country back in a left direction.

We are a community, a village, a town, a nation, one people as enshrined under our most holy of democratic documents. It isn’t every man for himself. Americans are meant to take care of each other, fend for each other, even fight for each other.

Did our forefathers throw off a monarchy only so we could create a new one of oligarchs? Are we Russians, or something?

We are American citizens and we rule this place!

I know its easy rhetoric, and easier typed than done. Our devils are in the disagreements, but if things continue down the Tea Party rabbit hole we’ve slipped into, we’re bound for a new kind of corporate feudalism our great-grandfathers fought to throw off.  Or even a kind of fascism our grandparents fought to keep from coming to our shores.

So what do we do? How do we make it right?

Recently, I received a mailer from the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Mostly, since it was a survey that was bent towards raising funding and pushing what they feel is their agenda than trying to get to my opinion: it mostly made me mad. I was emblematic of the problems with the DNC right now. I’d say that maybe it is time to look for alternatives, but this is a party that has been with us and evolved since Jefferson.

It is the party of the people. It needs to listen to the people again rather than its own self interests. Leading questions to validate your own opinion, and blind fund raising are not going to fix anything. Hard work, fight, and determination will have to do it.

Also, it’ll take better media coordination than Tea Party Nation has going on. We used to be masters at this? Where did it go wrong?

In the meantime, here’s some links. The first is to an article in the Nation by Jason Schneider detailing the rise of the Occupy Wall Street movement. It’s a pretty good read, and a pretty good article all around.  “From Occupy Wall Street to Occupy Everywhere”

Also, here’s a link to how to get Hi Res versions of some of the posters from the movement like the one above. www.gstrike.org.

Finally, a bit of a chaser for the serious talk. I really don’t know why I love this song so much, but its what sold me on this band years ago.

Mazzy Star

After years of avoiding it, I finally get what the appeal is with this band. The twangy disconnect is like the Velvet Underground at their most meandering. Or Pink Floyd from their soundtrack era. It comes at you as if you’re in a haze. Its blissful, really.

So it might be best described as junkie music, but it works when you’re dog tired and in the same sort of emotional disconnect from a long day’s work.  Sometimes, it works to just slow down and take care.

I’m starting with their first album as I listen to the band for the first, proper time. I highly recommend taking some time to stop and wander though the sonic fog with them.

Follow Up Post to Occupy Wall Street

Occupy Wall Street Faq from the Nation

This is a good article explaining what’s going on in NYC. I might post more on this just to help spread the word.

NYC Protests

Occupy Wall Street

They have a Declaration that is worth checking out. I’m linking via the BoingBoing article just because it is a little easier. There’s a lot of valid discussion floating around the whole thing, but waking people up has to begin somewhere. Believe it or not, the policy changes are already out there and being discussed. We just have to get more people thinking about them. It is a shame, however, that most average people really just don’t have the time, or the energy to think about how to fix our failing experiment with democracy.

We’ll get there.

As for those who claim this is more style than substance…well, so is the Tea Party.

Back to the Transformers

First, it is that time of the week, and I need to pimp this week’s podcast over at Spreaker. It is a collection of bands with odd names that one way or another felt connected to listened to the early Smashing Pumpkins. I also tossed in a bit of Syd Barret’s solo work to pep things up. After giving it a listen all the way through without having to worry about the timings for recording, I think it is one of my favorite I’ve made so far on Spreaker. As I said, we’ve got some Syd, some Pumpkins to listen to, along with The Silversun Pickups, Chairlift (a new favorite around here), Manic Street Preachers, something new from Mates of State, and The Pains of Being Pure At Heart!

So venture on on over and get my listener stats up! Now. back to the Transformers…

I will admit, I’m surprised I am taking this fanfiction I’ve been working on as seriously as I have. Like a lot of good cover versions: I am taking what I like, and fixing what just doesn’t work for me. I just hope I am not doing to others what I feel Michael Bay did to our childhood memories.

I’d liked to hope that as I write it, I’m able to exorcise the those old desires to do this when I was little and coming up with Talesof the Super Robot (which no actual word of it exists beyond a scribbling in a notebook that had memories of the creation it). Maybe I won’t. Maybe my writing will still come from that little boy that really likes the adventure and wants to keep it going in his own mind.

That is the beauty of fanfiction, I think. It is flattery, and I am working on it mostly for myself (and for K, but that’s a different story.)

As I’m working on it, I’m endeavoring to make it a celebration of a lot of the science fiction I love. I’ve even got one of the Autobots transforming into a certain Corellian Freighter just because I can. I can give into my curiosity with the Singularity, Star Wars, Star Trek, John Scalzi, and I only know what other plot pickings I’ll grab just because I like science fiction that damn much.

It’s time I celebrate it rather than keep taking it too seriously. Simon R. Green has made a career out of writing thinly veiled fanfiction and satire for years. Why can’t I have a littler fun with it?

In the meantime, I keep meaning to link up K’s on going Transformers story called “Pursuit” which she and a friend of hers has been having a blast writing for a couple months now. Of course, this isn’t for kids in any way shape of form. It is barely even for my eyes.

Adult Swim – Unclassified

Adult Swim – Unclassified

I saw this while watching American Dad reruns on Adult Swim. I’m downloading it now and waiting to see if it’s worth a listen. Still, its a free mix of “future” music, and might be worth it just for the tracks form some up and comers.

Sometimes, a little music that glitches and twitches does the trick.
