More on Occupy Wall Street

I know I’ve been silent lately. Mostly, it has been from working nonstop as I get used to a new schedule with work. Who knew Americans had any money or credit left for the level of consumerism involved in a new iPhone launch?

My fascination with the Occupy Wall Street movement continues. Even though I don’t currently live in a place that would truly respect or understand the ideals of the movement (this being the heart of Tea Party Nation), I truly support the hopes of those people attempting to steer our country back in a left direction.

We are a community, a village, a town, a nation, one people as enshrined under our most holy of democratic documents. It isn’t every man for himself. Americans are meant to take care of each other, fend for each other, even fight for each other.

Did our forefathers throw off a monarchy only so we could create a new one of oligarchs? Are we Russians, or something?

We are American citizens and we rule this place!

I know its easy rhetoric, and easier typed than done. Our devils are in the disagreements, but if things continue down the Tea Party rabbit hole we’ve slipped into, we’re bound for a new kind of corporate feudalism our great-grandfathers fought to throw off.  Or even a kind of fascism our grandparents fought to keep from coming to our shores.

So what do we do? How do we make it right?

Recently, I received a mailer from the Democratic National Committee (DNC). Mostly, since it was a survey that was bent towards raising funding and pushing what they feel is their agenda than trying to get to my opinion: it mostly made me mad. I was emblematic of the problems with the DNC right now. I’d say that maybe it is time to look for alternatives, but this is a party that has been with us and evolved since Jefferson.

It is the party of the people. It needs to listen to the people again rather than its own self interests. Leading questions to validate your own opinion, and blind fund raising are not going to fix anything. Hard work, fight, and determination will have to do it.

Also, it’ll take better media coordination than Tea Party Nation has going on. We used to be masters at this? Where did it go wrong?

In the meantime, here’s some links. The first is to an article in the Nation by Jason Schneider detailing the rise of the Occupy Wall Street movement. It’s a pretty good read, and a pretty good article all around.  “From Occupy Wall Street to Occupy Everywhere”

Also, here’s a link to how to get Hi Res versions of some of the posters from the movement like the one above. www.gstrike.org.

Finally, a bit of a chaser for the serious talk. I really don’t know why I love this song so much, but its what sold me on this band years ago.
